this is going to be a rather short post. and I’m sorry. I really just wanted to write about a boy in my graduating class who is currently fighting for his life.  I don’t want to give away details, and I’m  not a primary source of info, but he’s a good friend, of a friend of mine (does that make sense?) Anyway, Blake is 18, and will be graduating in june of 2009.  on this past Monday, he was in class and healthy.  monday night he as admitted to the hospital complaing of leg pain and infection.  by either teus night or wednesday, he was in a medically induced coma fighting for his life.  One of his legs was amputated.  the culprite? a very resiliant strain of Strep A. the same bacteria that causes strep throat.  however, it can mutate in some people and become Necrotizing Faciitis, or, flesh-eating bacteria.  it spreads incredibly fast and is very hard to kill.  it’s mortality rate in patients is as high as 80%.

I have always heard that you shouldnt expect to graduatate with everyone in your class.  it is almost unaviodable that someone will die in an accident or from desease.  still, knowing this, it is incredibly difficult to hear the news.  I was not clsoe friends with Blake, but I know who he is.  it hits home when one of your own suddenly is in a situation like this. …I can only imagine what his family is going through. I think on how this would affect me if my brother got sick….its just…..unbelievable.  Blake’s an active kid, he was on the crew team.  If he pulls through, he is now missing an entire leg.  something like that will change his life forever.

I am asking that you keep Blake Haxton and his family in your thoughts and prayers.  We are all hoping for the best.

Keep fighting, Blake. Everyone loves you.

I haven’t gotten a chance to ride that much.  the snow finally melted, but it’s been wickedly cold in its place. yesterday, it only reached 19F. I’m sorry, but march officially qualifies as spring. and it is not allowed to be cold in spring.  seriously! it’s been cold here since november. sure we’ve had the odd warm day, but overall, summer is late. it needs to get here NOW. anyway, point being, it’s been too cold for me to ride and therefore, I’m on a bit of a hiatus.  money’s tight right now, and although willow isn’t exspensive, he doesn’t still cost a pretty penny. I won’t be able to ride when I first leave for university, and a good friend of mine owns three horses…..so if I take a break from mike and F&A for awhile…I think I’ll be alright.

and remember how I ranted about how I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life?  I’ve had an epiphany. costume design.  I don’t know why I didn’t discover cosplaying earlier, but I love it.  and for the record, no, I don’t like anime.  I’m much more of a disney type of gal.  to the point that I have successfully created a fully useable mermaid tail. It’s a part of an ariel costume. It’s not disney perfect, naturally, because I have to fit a monofin into it, but It’s  pretty damn sweet. I’m also hoping to do childresn parties and such. if you want to find my inspiration for the whole mermaid thing, please please please google hannah fraser. she’s amazing and truely inspirational person.

anyway, in sight of the mermaid thing, I’m working on Ariels pink gown as well as Aerith (FFVII), belle and odette. I’m really getting excited about this.  I know this sounds cheesey, but its very very satasfying. I was going to purchase a mermaid tail, but being able to create something myself really is something else. (that, and I thoroughly enjoy weraing it in pools. little kids love it). I’ll post pictures soon.

uhm….what else….what else. got my wisdom teeth removed. nope, I didn’t die. actually I was pretty lucky. mine already came through, so I was only outta it for 2 or 3 days.  some of my friends were drugged for a week or more. go me.

In other news, my thesis is coming along. going to just do a directors pitch for the performance and I really want to make the costumes by hand.  it’s gonna be sweet. I’ve never really made costumes before, and I kinda want to get into cosplaying (or at least, make my own renaissance stuff so I dont have to spend $200 on a frickin corset–that and I’m addicted to disney.) I figure dance costumes are s good place to start, and they leave a lot of freedom for creativity.  I have some sketches. maybe I’ll post them later.

and WINTER ARRIVED! YAY!  lovely O-H-I-O had a blizzard come through. so everything is covered in 6″ of snow and about a 1/8 of ice.  it’s gorgeous. driving is a extreme sport because ou never know if the car is going to STOP. but nonetheless, its been fun.  and we had a snowday last week. so for all the cold and wet, some good comes out of this weather. =)

or rather, thigns have been happening in my life that I have to record before I forget, and you know what, facebook just isn’t the right place to do that. no one uses myspace anymore, and I’m not a fan of livejournal. Et voila! you found this. oh goody. you’re in for some excitment (sarcasm there, it doesn’t translate through text very well does it? didn’t think so).

SO first things first, I’m not goning to ramble on about me, thats boring. who wants to read that? besides its selfcentered and egotistical, something I try to avoid. don’t always succeed, but I always TRY to avoid it. my opint being, Wednesday night (11-19-08) I took the three hour drive to Ball State University (since I didn’t tell you, I live in Columbus, OH. Ball State is in Muncie, Indiana.). no, I didn’t drive alone, you kidding? I would’ve fallen asleep and crashed!! no, I dragged the padre along with me.  point I’m getting at, is the incredible Doug Jones was doing a presentation there. Now, BEFORE I sound like a crazed fan (I’m not, I HATE that kind of thing) I’m a theatre student, and about 2 months ago, I  rediscovered Hellboy–not for the storyline, but for the effects and costuming. you see where this is going? ANYWAY thats when my brain went, omgosh! I love this!! and imdb became my best friend in showing me who the brilliant actor was behind Abe. That of course, made me convince my spanish-fluent brother (I’m more a french gal myself) to get Pans Labyrinth.  Besides being a crying WRECK by the end of the film (my god! It’s beautiful! go see it if you haven’t!!!) I was compleately floored by Pans costuming. iit was brilliant. I’m not a hollywood fan. really. I mean, yeah, if Johnny Depp strolled down my street, part of me would be all ITS JACK SPARROW! GET HIM! but for all I know Depp could be an ass (no idea, never met the man) and that would just ruin it for me. I don’t care who you are ro what you do, there are good people in this world, and people that I don’t nessicerily want in my life.

ANYWAY found out that Dougie was doing a lecture at Ball State, and I jumped at the chance. I’m not a convention person, never been to one. Ball State is also on my list of schools that I’m looking at, so it was perfect, get to see the presentation and count it as a college visit-YES! I mentioned earlier that I forced my dad into driving–he had seen the end of pans labyrinth and after having death wishes for the capitan, decided that it really was a beautiful story. (still hates that caracter though. its pretty funny).

Dougs presentation was “Idenity: The Man behind the Mask”.  Yes, I realize there’s some irony in that title, seeing as Doug is known for his creature work, but its more than that. It really is.  He talked about how everyone has a mask that they show. the public mask. the one they promote and show to camera’s, teachers, bosses. And how its so easy to lose yourself behind that mask.  Going through highschool, his words deffinetly rang true in me.  I’ve never been the popular kid. I’m not the nerdy one either, but I’ve never really been “Mainstream”. I didn’t go to weekend parties, I wasn’t on a school team–I spent all my after school time riding. my interests have always been a little more mature than my classmates. I’d honestly rather listen to “Dance of the Reed Pipes” than Rhianna (hey tchaikovski is brilliant. shuddup). I’m also a theatre geek. I love it. love ALL of it. production, tech, acting. love it. point ebing, I’ve never quite fit in. I’m that person who just drifts from group to group.  Doug, going through his highschool years talked about he wasn’t sure what he was or why he was here.  I know that feeling. its something that I am still working to figure out. and now, approaching the middle of my senior year, I still don’t have an answer. I’m closer today than I was a few years ago though.  He talked of how yes, he was the public ‘Doug Jones’. the one that went to conventions and did publicity. The Doug Jones that pushed his career forward and donned the silver body suit, and how, when he finally steppted out of the Doug Jones mask, he didn’t know who “Dougie” was. 

I tell you, this man is amazing.  To have him be so grounded, and so down to earth, despite the fact that he is widely known, and  has been Abe Sapien, Fauno, silver surfer and many others, he can still figure out what is important in life.  people just can’t do that anymore.  He deffinetly helped me look into myself, and realize that it isn’t what you do, that makse you who you are.  I’ve always labled myself as the “Rider”. it’s who I am, right? I devoted most of my life to horses.  But it isn’t. I’m a daughter, I’m a sister, I’m the mother to a puppy (and my horse, or it certinally feels so), I’m a friend, and I’m a role model (why? I don’t know. ask the 9year old that follows me around at the barn. I don’t know what she see’s in me, I really dont.)

not to get overly philosophical, because I really hate that kind of thing, let me also say that doug is the most hilairious laid back person EVER.  not to mention the  nicest.  every kind thing that has ever been said about him is a gross understatement.  he is the most generous man I have ever had the privliage of being with.  Not only did he wait for his mother and brother who were in the audience (he looks nothing like his siblings. its weird) but he was genuinly touched that university students admired him and actually wanted to chat.   When he found out I was from Ohio, and drove a little under 3hrs to come, he pulled me into a huge hug. (thats another thing, he’s a very touchy-feely person. LOVE IT) the conversation went something like;

Me: yeah, I’m a theatre student, came all the way from Ohio to see this. very glad I did

Doug: You what?? bless your heart, come here (hugs)

Me: Aw, I wanted to! it was closer than LA anyway.

I l ove this guy.  went on to talk about ym senior thesis which is a either a full production or a directors pitch for a small “skit” that combines pantomime and ballet/modern dance.  Think less formal than a ballet, but more fluid than mime. make sense? anyway, doug loved the idea.  I had just changed it that evening after listening to him actually. inspiration comes to me at the oddest times.

so, I eventually returned home to good ol o-h-i-o around 1:30am with my dad compleately taken aback by dougs generousity. It was awesome

when dads have cameras, they tend to take candid shots you’re unaware of.  Both of us turned after this and were like “huh?” at least I look somewhat sane.
